STOP (IF: Red // Jan 26)

"Illustration Friday is a weekly illustration challenge. A topic is posted every Friday and then participants have all week to come up with their own interpretation. " it's saying on Illustration Friday. But the more popular this wonderful idea became, more and more nice illustrators leave illus done before the subject has been published and to top it: even promote these drawings for sale.

I am not jealous and there are some wonderful drawings on their way. But I'd like to have the spontaneous fun back, which lifted this forum - I am just a little bit tired of clicking through all the other posts not directly related to the idea of IF.

I can understand your frustrations and have often times wondered why there were so many pieces that had already been created, but I re-read the rules under the "participate" section of Illustration Friday and it states this towards the bottom:

"- You can use an illustration you already created if it’s appropriate to the topic. "

you got me, anonym ;-)

I allways stayed with the "About" pages - still I don't really like it and sometimes "seee red" as we say it over here ...

I absolutely agree! I use IF as a weekly self challenge - I try to get each submission done concept to finish in an hour or less. Sometimes you'll nail it sometimes not, but again that's the challenge. I know what the rules say, but I've always felt that IF was designed to be a more spontaneous exercise. Still having said all that, I can appreciate beautiful work long since completed that's posted . . .

AMEN!!! gotta say, I thought that the whole point of being inspired, was uh "inspiration". drives me batty seing folks peddle old wares, show me something new! Or hell, lie about it, but it does disturb me that if you don't have the time to post something fresh, then don't post. Anyway- Thanks.

well I see your point, but different people use it for different reasons. I do post older things sometimes (like this week), and I do new things other weeks.

If you think about "illustration friday night" you'll realize there are a lot of different opinions on how IF should be used (some people only want to see cute things, some people don't want to see anything cute), but one reason IF is so popular is that it accommodates a lot of different people's needs.

Thanks for your distinguishing comments ...

... yes and agreement - I appreciate good and inspiring work, too.

... nope, I was not about cute or non-cute.

Easiest solution: Maybe Penelope might make up a third category next to "Medium" and "Style" - "Ex Ante/Ex Post" ... ;-)

I used to have more time on my hands. I used to create something new for almost every single Illustration Friday. And then I got busy. On weeks where I had absolutely no time for something new, I found that I had something from my archives to post that was suitable for the challenge. And I realized that even if it wasn't created specifically for the challenge, it was still new to whomever was viewing it. Sometimes I find that older pieces fit the topic so well, it's a no brainer, and I use the old stuff. So give a break to people who post mostly new stuff, but sometimes don't have the time for a fresh piece.

@ jeanette: I wasn't really about good or bad art ;-) and folks go and see her non-red sketch related to IF here:

@ anonym: hm, in the beginning the whole IF was just about "let's see what will come out if hundreds around the globe just get the new subject today/this week" ... a worldwide spanned collaboration on one subject in a certain period.

If someone doesn't have the time - well that's o.k, no pressure to show some "old" beauties ;-) it happily wasn't an "I-have-to-be-in-contest": Exactly that made the difference ...

... there were and are so many places to share old (and surely good pictures and more than worth to be shared), IF just was different ;-)

That's all, I was thinking about ..

My attitude to this is kinda: whatever floats your boat. My sign would read: Stop posting bunny rabbits on IF. Or rather: stop posting LIVE bunny rabbits. Nothing wrong with DEAD bunny rabbits. Especially if served in a nice stew.
